Why get an underwater drone?

Underwater drones serve many different purposes for amateurs and professionals alike.

Underwater photography/videography

There is no doubt that the underwater world is exquisitely beautiful. An underwater drone allows you to capture 4K pictures and videos of this underwater world without you having to get into the water yourself.

Underwater inspections

These devices are ideal for underwater inspections. Check the condition of your boat from underneath, see what is going on with mooring lines or the propeller. It’s also great for commercial inspections such as checking on the condition of piers or underwater pipes.

Treasure hunting

There are billions of dollars worth of sunken treasure lying on ocean floors around the world. With an underwater drone, you can inspect sunken ships for treasure.

Find fish and study their behavior

Underwater drones can help fishermen locate fish, as well as learn about fish behavior by filming how they interact with your bait.

The Best Underwater Drones

PowerRay Explorer with 4K UHD camera

The sleek and modern looking PowerRay Explorer from PowerVision is easy enough for a beginner to use, while also having enough advanced features for professionals.

The features of this underwater drone include:

Max-depth: The drone can descend to a respectable maximum depth of 98 feet (30 meters).

Max-speed: Its maximum speed is 4 knots – which is about 4.5 miles per hour.

Headlights: Underwater conditions can get rather murky at times, but that won’t be a problem for the PowerRay Explorer as it’s equipped with two high-quality dimmable 450-lumen headlights.

Camera: The device features an impressive 4K UHD underwater camera that can capture 12MP photos and 4K (30FPS Max) video footage. The only downside to this camera is its 1/2 inch sensor which should be a little bit bigger. All footage is recorded onto a 32GB SD card.

Battery: The drone is powered by a lithium-polymer battery (included with your purchase) and powers the device for an impressive 4 hours at a time.

Mobile app: There is also a mobile app that is compatible with all Android and iOS mobile devices. The app allows users to view real-time footage captured by the underwater camera and can even provide underwater data, various alerts and can also help identify various fish species.

Full control functions: With the PowerRay Explorer you have full control of everything such as real-time positioning, light settings, the camera, depth, and speed.

Tether cable: The underwater drone is connected to a base via a 165-foot long tether cable. The cable is necessary because radio frequencies are problematic underwater so instead it sends data through the cable. The good news is that the cable never gets entangled or interferes with the drone, but the bad news is that the 165-foot cable length is a bit short at times and they could’ve made it a bit longer.

The product has dimensions of 13.3 x 15.5 x 22.75 inches and weighs 12.7 pounds.

PowerRay Wizard with 4K UHD camera

The PowerRay Wizard is an improved version of the aforementioned PowerRay Explorer.

Max-depth: It can descend to a maximum depth of 98 feet (30 meters).

Max-speed: It has a maximum speed of 4 knots (4.5mph).

Headlights: Murky water won’t be a problem for this underwater drone as it has two powerful 450-lumen headlights that can be dimmed.

Camera: It has a 4K UHD underwater camera that captures crystal clear 12MP photos and takes 4K (30FPS Max) video footage. All footage is recorded onto an onboard 63GB SD card.

Battery: It’s powered by a lithium-polymer battery (included with your purchase) and powers the device for an impressive 4 hours at a time.

Mobile app: The product comes with a mobile app that works on both Android and iOS mobile phones. What it does is sends you information about the water conditions, alerts, allows you to view real-time footage of what the drone is seeing, and a nifty little feature that identifies fish species.

Full control functions: The PowerRay Wizard, just like the PowerRay Explorer, gives you full control of everything like real-time positioning, light settings, the camera, depth, and speed.

Tether cable: Radio frequencies have problems underwater, which is why all data is sent via the tether cable. The cable is physically attached to the drone but never interferes with its operations or gets entangled. As previously mentioned, the 165-foot long tether cable from the PowerRay Explorer was a bit too short for our liking, but the PowerRay Wizard has a much better 230-foot long tether cable.

Fishing technology tool: Fishing is a breeze with the PowerRay Wizard drone as it comes fully equipped with a fish-finding sonar and allows you to place and locate bait with the magnetic bait drop function.

Virtual headset: As mentioned, the app that comes with the underwater drone allows you to see everything the drone sees in real-time on your mobile phone. This can be a problem because of screen size limitations and it can be hard to see when you’re watching with sunlight. This won’t be a problem with the PowerRay Wizard because it comes with a Zeiss VR One Plus headset which allows you to see everything crystal clear in a first-person view.

The product has dimensions of 18.3 x 10.8 x 5.5 inches and weighs 14 pounds.
