Pulau Langkawi is the largest island of the 104 islands that belong to the Langkawi archipelago that sits off the northwestern coast of Malaysia.

During high tide, the Langkawi archipelago consists of 94 islands but during the low tide there are 104. These islands are situated about 12 miles off the coast of Malaysia in what is known as the Andaman Sea. The largest-sized island is Pulau Langkawi and it’s one of the only two islands that are populated. It’s also a duty-free zone. Pulau Langkawi stretches for 12 miles from north to south. The coastal regions are mainly flat plains with the occasional limestone ridge here and there while the rest consists of soft white sandy beaches lined with thousands of coconut trees. The interior is mainly jungle and mountains which is a dream come true for every nature lover. The biggest tourist attraction on Pulau Langkawi island is diving as there are many exceptional places to go snorkeling and scuba diving.

Visit the most incredible beaches in Malaysia

Some sections of the coastline are made up of limestone ridges that are not suitable for beachgoers but luckily there are more than enough white sandy beaches here too, thanks to the large size of Pulau Langkawi Island. To the south of Pulau Langkawi sits Pantai Cenang, the most popular beach on the island. It’s 1 mile long and has a string of coconut trees and restaurants dotted along the beach. Other popular beaches include Pantai Tengah, Pasir Tengkorak, Tanjung Rhu, Pantai Kok, and many many others Many of the beaches here have also made the top 10 lists of the best beaches in Malaysia by numerous online travel publications.

Kuah is the main town of Pulau Langkawi island. The town has a port where ferries from the Malaysian mainland and Penang Island stop. Most of the hotels and resorts can be found here and there many here to suit everyone’s budget. Sadly, you won’t find any white sandy beaches along the coast of Kuah as they are located on other parts of the island. The thing that makes this town so popular with tourists is that it’s duty-free and you will find stores here that sell anything and everything you can imagine.

As with any tropical destination, scuba diving and snorkeling top the list of island activities. And luckily there are many diving spots found in and around Pulau Langkawi Island. The Pulau Payar Marine Park sits a few miles from the coast of the island and is a great place for beginners and families to try it out. The island itself is surrounded by numerous coral reefs and there are many other islands found close by that offer additional diving spots.

Pulau Langkawi Island has some of the most popular golf courses in Southeast Asia. There are 3 golf courses for you to choose from, each in a terrific location. The two pro golf courses are the Gunung Raya Golf Resort which sits at the foot of Raya Mountain and the Datai Bay Golf Club which is conveniently situated around the Datai Bay. The 99 East Golf Club is more suited for beginners and is also the very first golf course built on the island.

When To Go

The time of year you visit Pulau Langkawi can make a huge difference. The island receives almost 100 inches of rain per year. The rainy season is from March to November with August usually receiving the most rain. The dry season would be the ideal time to visit and this will be from December to February but temperatures are at their hottest during this time too.
