Pulau Hantu Island

Pulau Hantu, Singapore.

Just off the coast of Singapore’s southern coastline sits Pulau Hantu – a small charming island that offers clear waters, picturesque beaches, and lagoons.

Pulau Hantu island is actually two small islets situated right next to each other and has become a renowned destination for outdoor activities like scuba diving, snorkeling, and fishing. The two islands that makeup Pulau Hantu are Hantu Besar and Hantu Kecil with Hantu Besar being the largest of the two. The two islands are separated by a lagoon that can be crossed by foot during low tide and there is a section between the two islands that are connected by mangrove trees. Do not try to cross the lagoon during high tide because strong currents can often make it treacherous. There are also several stunning coral reefs – most of which are mushroom coral – which surrounds the island and the most common fish species found here are damselfish, angelfish, and clownfish. Lots of seahorses and giant clams are also often spotted around the coral reefs here.

Things To Do In Pulau Hantu

Unfortunately, both of the Pulau Hantu islands are small and the only real activities available here revolve around snorkeling and scuba diving. The beaches here are not as good as those found on other islands either and there aren’t any stores or supermarkets but here are some of the things you can do on Pulau Hantu.

Scuba Dive And Snorkel Around Mushroom Coral Reefs

Mushroom coral reefs are rare but Pulau Hantu has lots of them which is why so many scuba divers from around the world come to this small Singapore island. The waters are mostly safe and scuba diving around the coral reefs of Pulau Hantu is suitable for beginners too. Just keep in mind that there are no diving shops here on Pulau Hantu from where you can organize scuba diving lessons or rent gear.

Other Activities

Things to do in Pulau Hantu.

If you are not interested in scuba diving or snorkeling then you won’t have a whole lot of things to do. Other tourist activities apart from the ones already mentioned include picnics and walks along the beaches. The islands also have two lagoons which are ideal for swimming and you will regularly see tourists swimming here or spending their afternoons on the shores.

When To Go

The weather is warm and pleasant for most of the year but the island is subjected to monsoons since it is situated in the tropics. Normally this wouldn’t be too much of a problem on other islands in the area but because the only real activities on Pulau Hantu for you to enjoy are scuba diving and snorkeling so it will be a problem since the excessive rain affects water clarity. Therefore, it’s best to avoid during the monsoon season.
