Mexico’s Del Carmen Island is the most scenic of the 6 main Loreto Islands and offers tourists a wide range of outdoor activities.
The Loreto Bay National Park sits off the west coast of Mexico in what is known as the Sea of Cortez. There are 6 main Loreto islands which are Coronado island, Danzante Island, Santa Catalina Island, Santa Cruz Island, Monserrat island, and Del Carmen Island – with most tourists claiming that Isla Del Carmen is their favorite. Not surprising since the island is famous for its picturesque landscapes which include rocky deserts and stunning coastlines. Del Carmen Island also features unique wildlife and is home to thousands of bighorn sheep. Del Carmen Island is extremely hot for most of the year and although the island is quite small you will be surprised at how many tourist activities are available here such as exploring the gorgeous island interior, hunting, visiting spectacular beaches, fishing, and a whole lot more.

Things To Do On Del Carmen Island
Explore the island interior
Much of the interior of Del Carmen Island consists of rocky deserts, mountains, and deep canyons – which is why many tourists who visit here can’t help but fall in love with the beautiful landscapes. There are beautiful plant species, many of which are uncommon in most parts of Mexico and there are large amounts of bighorn sheep roaming around. Photographers often visit the island to take photos while hunters (mostly from the US) come to hunt bighorn sheep.
Enjoy the beaches and water activities
The beaches here stretch for miles and the rocky desert background makes it even more appealing. Some of the best beaches here are the shores of Terminos Lagoon, Norte Beach, San Julian Beach, Tortugueros Beach, and Bahamitas Beach. The waters are calm and have a deep blue color and are great for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, swimming with dolphins, and big game fishing. It’s also one of the best places in the world to spot whales such as humpbacks, grays, and even the largest mammal on earth – the Great Blue Whale.
There is a range of other activities on Del Carmen Island such as hunting bighorn sheep (a very expensive activity), riding to various places across the desert landscape on mountain bikes, and taking up scuba diving lessons. Punta Lobos is a great place to visit if you would like to see enormous colonies of sea lions and island hopping is another viable option if you would like to visit the other 5 main islands of Loreta. The evenings here are spectacular as the sky comes alive with millions of clearly visible stars – a must for stargazers.
When To Go
Any time of the year is a good time as the weather is mostly hot and sunny all year round – although the summers are often unbearably hot so just keep that in mind. It’s also important to note that whales are only spotted and bighorn hunting is only allowed during certain times of year – so it depends on what you want to do here.
