About Phu Quoc Island

Phu Quoc Island

The Vietnamese island of Phu Quoc.

The beautiful and underdeveloped Phu Quoc Island is quickly becoming the most popular island holiday destination in Vietnam.

Koh Trol, more commonly known as Phu Quoc, is the largest of all the Vietnamese islands. It’s situated a mere 5 miles from Cambodia in the Gulf of Thailand and is surrounded by 21 other smaller islands. A few years ago fishing and farming were the biggest industries on Phu Quoc, but today tourism is growing at a rapid rate and the island is fast becoming one of the top holiday destinations in Vietnam. A lot of people and travel publications have said that Phu Quoc has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Many have also compared it to Phuket before it became over commercialized but sadly that could change soon as plans are currently underway for mass development on the island which would include casino’s and various types of residential areas.

Things To Do On Phu Quoc Island

Fishing boats in the waters of Phu Quoc.

Hire a boat:

There are two good reasons why you would want to hire a boat while here. The first reason is to go fishing. Tourists have the option of paying extra for a guide that will show them where all of the best fishing spots are. The second reason is to go off exploring the other 21 smaller islands that can be found close to Phu Quoc. Many of these islands are uninhabited which means you are able to spend an entire day or two on your very own tropical island.

Motorbike rides on Phu Quoc

Explore Phu Quoc on a motorbike:

Motorbikes are the most common forms of transport in Vietnam and the same applies for the islands. Motorbikes can be rented for $10 a day and it’s a great way to make your way around Phu Quoc. You are able to ride along sand trails that will take you to the various beaches, a number of villages and even ride through beautiful national parks. Unlike many of the other islands in the region, you won’t be able to explore all of it on foot as Phu Quoc is a pretty large island.

The beaches of Phu Quoc Island

Enjoy the beaches:

The best thing about Phu Quoc is its stunning beaches. An added bonus is its tranquility as the place is mostly undeveloped and even during the peak season it will still be much quieter than other places such as Bali and Koh Rong. In my opinion, the most beautiful beaches can be found along the north coast of Phu Quoc Island. Some of my favorite beach destinations are Ganh Dau Beach, Vung Bau Beach and Bai Thom Beach. There are of course many other beaches to choose from.

When To Go

The optimal time to visit Phu Quoc is between the months of November and March. This is when humidity is at it’s lowest, the temperatures are lower than usual and the weather is predominantly sunny. If you would like to avoid large crowds then head to the island between April and June. It’s not as busy which means that prices are much lower than usual. However it’s also the hottest period and you can expect an average temperature of 80 Fahrenheit.
