The Pearl Islands is a beautiful forest covered archipelago that is renowned for its world class holiday resorts, tall coconut trees and snow white beach sand. These islands is also the place where they filmed three seasons of Survivor. The three main Pearl Islands are Isla Contadora, Isla del Rey and Coiba Island – while most of the other islands in the group are uninhabited. The easiest way to get to the islands is by taking a 45 minute long flight from Panama City to Isla Contadora. The other way is by charter boat which takes up to 2 hours longer to reach and you can find these boats in Panama City and also various other places along the west coast of the country.
Not only is Isla Contadora the third largest of all the Pearl Islands but it’s also the most visited. It’s actually one of the most visited holiday destinations in Panama right after Panama City. Contadora was once a favorite hiding spot for pirates who used the island to count whatever they stole. Today Contadora offers its visitors some of the most breathtaking natural scenery, lots of sunshine, incredible colonial buildings and spectacular beaches.
Isla del Rey is the second largest of the Pearl Islands. It’s so large that it would still be larger even if you combined all the other islands in the archipelago together (except for Coiba). Isla del Rey is surrounded by pristine coral reefs and a number of turtles, whales and dolphins are often spotted in the waters just off the coast. The island interior has rivers and a large amount of natural hot water springs which seems to be particularly popular amongst visitors.
Coiba is the largest of the Pearl Islands and it’s also the largest island in all of Central America. Up to 75% of its interior consists of forests and its become internationally renowned for its rare and hard to find wildlife species such as the Coiba Howler Monkey and the Coiba Spinetail amongst many others. As a result – most of Coiba is a nature reserve and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992.
The Pearl Islands have incredible all year round weather and they dont fall victim to hurricanes because its not located in the Caribbean. The hottest time of year is from March to May so expect it to be extremely humid. Most tourists however prefer to visit here during the cooler period which is during October and November. Spending a vacation here can get expensive but you will be able to cut your costs considerably by booking your holiday here a few months in advance.
