Fiji has world class private islands, high quality spas, great cuisine, stunning shorelines and an abundance of activities, no wonder it has become one of the world’s most popular island honeymoon destinations. As mentioned before, the Fiji Islands are made up of more than 300 islands of which only about 100 are inhabited. This excludes the 500 smaller surrounding islets.

As much as 90% of Fiji’s total population resides on 2 of the 300+ islands. These islands are Vanua levu and Viti Levu, with Viti Levu being the most popular as it’s where you will find Suva (the capital city) and the main international airport. Most people live on the coastline of Fiji since the interior regions are very mountainous (reaching up to more than 4000 feet) and are completely covered in lush tropical jungles.

The 5 Main Islands of Fiji

With more than 300 islands that make up Fiji how will you know which one to pick for your visit? Below you will find 5 of the main Fiji islands which are Viti Levu Island, Vanua Levu Island, Taveuni Island, Kadavu Island and Denarau Island. Here are some of the most frequented Fiji destinations to choose from for your family holiday or honeymoon.

Viti Levu

Viti Levu Island

Viti Levu (alternatively known as Great Fiji) is where most of the action happens as it’s home to most of the resorts, the largest cities Fiji has to offer and the international airport. It’s also where 70% of the population resides. Viti Levu is where you will find the highest peak in the archipelago – Mount Victoria and some pretty astounding scuba diving sites such as Beqa Lagoon and the Coral Coast. Even though it’s the busiest and most popular island – you will still come across many deserted white sandy beaches on Viti Levu if you prefer peace and quiet.

Vanua Levu

Vanua Levu Island

Vanua Levu is the 2nd most popular Fiji destination and also the 2nd largest of the islands. It’s a very popular yacht destination thanks to it’s naturally protected bay area. Tourists usually visit here for the nature as it has some spectacular dive sites, the Hibiscus highway is another popular attraction as tourists can drive it for some of the most scenic views in Fiji and then there are various hiking trails. The best place to go for hiking is the Wasali nature Reserve.

Taveuni Island

Taveuni Island

Taveuni Island is cigar shaped and has been completely formed by volcanic activity. The center of Taveuni has a volcano which reaches down to the very bottom of the Pacific Ocean floor. Taveuni is also known as the ‘Garden Island’ because of its beautiful plant life and is also the third largest of the Fiji Islands. Taveuni Island is popular among tourists for its scuba diving sites, plentiful waterfalls and nature areas.

Kadavu Island

Kadavu Island

Kadavu Island is the fourth largest as well as the least populated and least developed of the main Fiji Islands. It’s the best place for nature lovers as Kadavu merely has one town and not many roads at all. Popular tourist activities here include things such as scuba diving the Great Astrolabe Reef, sea kayaking, long walks through lush tropical jungles and to sample some of the best cuisine in Fiji. Although Kadavu Island only has one town there are still more than enough accommodation available for tourists as there are smaller, yet luxurious resorts dotted along the coastline.

Denarau Island

Denarau Island

Denarau Island is a sub-island of Viti Levu and can be found just off its coast. It’s home to 8 of the largest resorts in the South Pacific Ocean and a world class golf course. The island of Denarau is a popular place for tourists to base themselves – especially when the resorts back on Viti Levu are fully booked. With spectacular shorelines, an abundance of exotic restaurants and terrific shopping experiences help make Denarau a great place to stay.
