A short distance to the south of the Thai mainland sits one of the most popular tropical islands in Southeast Asia, Phuket island. Phuket is connected to the mainland by two bridges which makes the island easily reachable but getting there by boat is another popular option. It’s an island surrounded by stunning oceans, breathtaking beaches, numerous internationally recognized diving spots, beautifully preserved old Sino Portuguese buildings and tropical jungles. All of these factors work together to give tourists an unforgettable holiday experience. Phuket Island is also perfectly located near a large number of other tropical islands and islets in the region such as the Phi Phi Islands, the Similan Islands, the Naka Islands and many many others.
The biggest tourist attraction of any tropical island are the beaches and Phuket is no exception when it comes to this. The island is surrounded by miles of exquisite beaches with some of the most visited beach destinations being Nai Harn Beach, Nai Thon Beach and Nai Yang Beach. The southern shores if Phuket are usually the most popular so expect crowded beaches here while the northern side of the island offers a bit more peace and quiet. Beach parties are common here and it’s also a great place from where you can participate in a wide variety of water sport activities.
The majority of Thailanders are Buddhists and all over the country, including Phuket, you will find Buddhist temples which are known as Wats. These temples are very important to the locals and Phuket is home to 29 of these beautiful temples. Locals visit these temples regularly in order to pray while Westerners visit to learn more about this interesting religion. Wats are usually open from 7am to 5pm.
Thai boxing, or Muay Thai as it’s more commonly called in Thailand, has increased in popularity around the world during the last decade. On Phuket’s Patong Beach, you can watch regular boxing matches. Muay Thai is a very dangerous sport practiced by martial arts experts, however watching these kind of tournaments can be very entertaining.
When in Phuket, visit Soi Bangla after sunset. It’s one of the most popular party areas on the island and is home to hundreds of night clubs and bars. Most of the bars are outside and has girls dancing around poles in an attempt to lure tourists in. It’s a region that has loads of loud music, dancing girls and beer but it’s best to keep an open mind while here as there are a fair amount of lady boys in the vicinity.
If you ever get tired or bored of Phuket Island, which is highly unlikely, you could always visit any of the other neighboring islands. There are large amounts of islands located near to Phuket and many of them can be reached in a very short period of time. One of the most popular ones to visit are the Phi Phi Islands which is renowned for its beauty and it has appeared in numerous movies over the years. Other popular destinations in the area includes Koh Kai, the Surin Islands, Koh Sirey and many many others.
Anytime of the year is a good time to visit Phuket Island. The weather is extremely hot and humid for most of the year but if you visit during the months of November to February you will be able to enjoy cooler weather. Rain isn’t too much of a problem on the island as most of the rain falls at night during the summer monsoon which is generally from May through to October.
