Koh Rong Island is truly stunning and can be reached by a 2 hour long boat ride from Sihanoukville, which is on the Cambodian mainland. The long boat ride is definitely worth the time and effort as the island has an abundance of raw beauty and an endless amount of activities for tourists to enjoy. There are a number of bays here, with each of them providing some of the most incredible snorkeling and scuba diving experiences. Some other activities tourists can enjoy includes mountain biking, hiking, riding along off road trails, kayaking and lots of pristine beaches to enjoy. The southeast corner of Koh Rong is the most developed and this is where you will find most of the accommodations and bars, however the island doesn’t have any internet or ATM machines.
Koh Rong Island is protected by the Cambodian government, therefore tourism on the island is still very limited. There are only a handful of accommodations available on the island which mainly consist of small bungalows and no hotels and resorts. For that reason, the tourism infrastructure is still in it’s early stages so you won’t have a whole lot of tour operators and things to do while on the island. Below I have listed some of the available activities on Koh Rong.
Snorkeling on Koh Rong island is incredible and you will have more than enough places to snorkel at. Some of the most popular places you can snorkel are at any of the seven bays on the island. There are also various other spots dotted along the coastline of the island. The best spot for corals are at Coral Bay which can be found on the southern end and you will be able to see all types of fish species such as diamond fish, yellow box fish, goat fish, sergeant fish, rabbit fish, seahorses and many many others. The waters surrounding the island are not treacherous and you won’t need a guide either.
On Koh Rong Island, tourists will be able to rent motorbikes and mountain bikes to go exploring on their own. The general prices range from $10 to $15 to rent one of these. The roads you will be traveling have a couple of large rocks and lots of loose stones which makes it dangerous because if you fall and get injured there will be no one standing by to assist you since the roads you will be traveling on are very isolated. Nevertheless, it’s a great way to see and explore the island interior if you do it safely enough.
Going on boat trips is a very popular activity. You will have the option to take ferry rides to smaller neighboring islets or to go on boat rides around Koh Rong island. Kayaking along the coastline is a great way to explore the island and renting a kayak costs as little as $10 for 3 hours.
Koh Rong has 23 white sandy beaches which comes to just over 20 miles of coastline. Most of the activity takes place on the southern coast of the island so the north, east and west coast of this stunning Cambodian paradise is pretty isolated. Some of the most popular beaches here are Sokha Beach, Lazy Beach, Koh Thmei Beach, Southwestern Beach and Longset Beach. Each of these beaches are nothing short of spectacular and there are also 18 other great beach destinations around the island waiting to be explored.
Anytime is a good time to visit Koh Rong as the place has pleasant weather all year round. The tourism infrastructure is still in it’s early stages so now would be a good time because it won’t be long until Koh Rong will be over run with tourists from all around the world like Phuket and Boracay.
